| Sexual problems are viewed
as a problem for both partners in the relationship, although one partner may be
manifesting the sexual dysfunction or difficulty. Thus, it is imperative that the
individuals involved be seen together toconjoint sex therapy and in couples counseling.
Sexual problems are not simply a question of technique, but also of unique attitudinal and
belief systems an andividual brings to bed with them. It is critical that each
partners" attitudes and beliefs regarding sex and sexuality are explored. A complete
sex history of each partner is the starting point in treatment. After securing all
pertinent information a treatment plan is established with the active participation of the
individuals involved. |
A
cognitive-behavorial approach for modifying sexual dysfunctions is utilized to assist the
coule in taking action to rectify any existing sexual difficulties. As mentioned above,
the couple is seen together since sexual difficulties are viewed as a systemic problem and
not an individual one. Assessment is often multimodal and psychophysiological in nature.
Treatment programs are developed which are geared toward meeting the particular needs and
goals of the clients.
Some techniques utilized are anxiety reduction techniques, imagery techniques, explict
homework assignments, bibliotherapy, sensate focus, orgasmic reconditioning, hypnosis. |
